Boyanup horsewoman Jacqueline Prentice loves to support her successful trainer husband Justin in his harness racing venture but her background with thoroughbreds and show horses has seen her take the lead in the growing breeding operation.
Prentice has a busy schedule, balancing the care of their two young children Carter (2) and Polly (8 months) with the preparation of two outstanding fillies for the APG Perth Yearling Sale on March 3.
“I only became involved in harness racing when I met Justin 15 years ago. My family was into gallops and show horses so I had never been to a trot meeting until I was 20! I worked for Dennis Roche (at his Boyanup training and agistment centre) for five years which was when I drove a horse in the cart for the first time.”
“The kids keep me very busy so I’m not involved in the racing side of things other than going to the meetings to support Justin when we can. Now the kids are getting older we will definitely be attending more meetings this year.
“Carter has just turned 2, he does love coming down the stables to help make feeds and feed the horses carrots but that’s as far as the interest has gone so far.”
The Prentices took over the Solid Gold Standardbreds breeding program after highly respected harness racing owner John Lohman passed away and have continued to build on his success. They have eight broodmares in their breeding program.
“We asked John if we could continue on his name and he allowed us to do that,” Prentice said. “He was a massive influence in us going down the breeding path, which we are very grateful for. He was a book of knowledge and hopefully we can make him proud.”
Lot 430 is an American Ideal filly from highly promising race mare Broadbeach (1.57.8, $34K). Broachbeach’s dam Galleons Honour produced six winners, and is a half sister to NZ Oaks and Australasian Breeders Crown winner Cheer The Lady (1.55.1, $314K).
Galleons Honour is a full sister to Galleons Supreme, who is the dam of 2YO and 3YO NZ filly of the year Spanish Armada (1.52.1, $787K).
Justin Prentice trained Broadbeach to four wins from 13 starts in WA, including a three-year-old metro victory at GP.
“Broadbeach did have a fair amount of ability. She probably didn’t get to show all of it in her career,” Jacqueline Prentice said. “Her filly is a beautiful strong type. But she is still an athletic type with a great temperament. I think she will catch people’s eye.
“Our Always B Miki filly (Lot 506) is very athletic. She has a lot of presence about her and she will continue to grow and mature into a lovely type.” Prentice continues “I think she will follow in her brothers footsteps, Ten to the Dozen, who was one of our first yearlings to ever sell at the sales, who has earnt $95,000 so far.”
The filly is out of Bettors Delight mare Nolessthanperfect, who won five races for Justin Prentice in 2019.
Nolessthanperfect is a half-sister to Vasari (1.52, $277K). Her grandam was outstanding race filly Ciccio Star (1.58.4, $102K), who left nine winners – including Major Star (1.52.3, $212K) and Group 2 winning filly Idancedallnight (1.59.3, $103K).
