A trip south of the border is on the card for underrated pacer The Black Prince (Bettor’s Delight).
Set to make his return at harness racing’s Club Menangle on Saturday night (Sep. 3), The Black Prince is being primed for several interstate targets.
First on the gelding’s agenda is the Victoria Cup followed by another Inter Dominion tilt.
The Cup is scheduled to be run at Tabcorp Park Melton on October 8, with the Inter Dominion to begin with heats in Ballarat on November 26.
“He had a nice break after a tough campaign and has come up well,” trainer Roy Roots junior said.
“All going well he will get back to his top and I’ll take him down to Victoria for the Cup and Inter.”
Runner-up during two recent trials, The Black Prince faces an arduous task after drawing the widest of 10 runners over a mile in the Kevin Newman Free-For-All.
Despite the Group 1 winner’s tough starting position Roots is confident The Black Prince can play a role in the finish.
“He’s had two good trials and is ready to go,” Roots said. “Nothing beats race fitness, but he is forward enough to win with the right run.”
Roots will also be represented by Pitch Perfect (Bettor’s Delight), which will begin from barrier four in the Group Three.
A last start winner against similar company, Pitch Perfect will be driven by in-form reinsman Jack Trainor.
“He’s fully wound up and will be hard to beat again,” Roots said. “I will also take him to Victoria to see if he can pick up a race or two and make his way into the Inter Dominion later in the year.”
