Rallying to get Mick back on track

When things get a bit tough for a participant in harness racing, people rally around them with an outpouring of support.

That’s just how it is in the sport with each looking out for one another.

And that has certainly been the case at Bathurst after popular hobby trainer-driver Michael Munro suffered a nasty injury following a fall on his home track a fortnight ago.

Munro was dumped heavily on the track just after the start when driving Kalypso King, which left him with multiple fractures in his pelvis.

Such was the concern for Munro, that the meeting was delayed for an hour and a half while paramedics stabilized him before transporting him to hospital.

“I think to myself that I was incredibly lucky in a way, that my injuries could have been a lot worse,” said Munro.

“Originally they (the paramedics) thought that I had a broken hip.

“I have been very humbled by the outpouring of support and well wishes from people in and out of the industry far and wide.

“It is a good feeling to know that people do care about you.

“Of course, I am hoping that I heal quickly and that I can get back on my feet sooner than is anticipated.

“I am one that doesn’t handle laying idle.

“At the time of the fall I had a handful of horses in work and my first thought was that they would need to go out [to the paddock].

“But we have been able to keep them in work, thanks mainly to my wife Michelle and daughters Kellie and Erin, along with James Dean and my brother Darryl.”

Team Munro have three horses entered at the Bathurst on Wednesday night and it would be a real shot in the arm for Michael Munro and his family should they perform well.

“We have three in, and I am not saying that they are superstars by any means but each of them always gives their all and race to the best of their ability,” he said.

“I am confident they will give a good account of themselves.”

Gold Crown finalist Take Out (Race 7) appears to be Munro’s best winning chance while The Girls Have It (Race 1) and Kalypso King (Race 3) are both in winnable races, should they get runs to suit.
