Fresh from reaching a personal milestone during the weekend, popular harness racing horseman Mat Rue will be looking to build towards the next highlight when he heads to Club Menangle today (Aug. 9).
Thanks to his double in Parkes on Friday night, Rue notched his 1000th win at the same track where he completed his maiden success.
It was on November 17, 2005 a young Rue was victorious behind Lace And Whiskey, with the mare going on to provide the concession driver with his first six wins.
Rue’s 1000th win came behind the Darren Harris-trained Art Legend (Modern Art), with led throughout from barrier three to score by 11-and-a-half metres from Poppy Franco.
Zebs Arwoc was a head away third in 2:01.7 over 1660 metres.
Thrilled with his moment in the spotlight, Rue was quick to note the sentimental scene.
“When he kicked clear I did start to celebrate a little,” Rue said. “It was a pretty good feeling knowing it was my 1000th wins as I crossed the finish.
“I got my first winner in Parkes, so to get my 1000th at the same place is appropriate.
“I still remember how rapt I was when I got my first win and nothing has changed…you’re always looking for that next winner.”
Although drawn wide in barrier seven, Bella Bling (Bettor’s Delight) shapes as Rue’s “next winner”.
Given a short break after her Bathurst success in May, Bella Bling has won her last two starts this campaign – both in Bathurst.
“She is in good form and will be hard to beat again,” Rue said. “This is a step up for her and she hasn’t drawn as well as I would have liked, but I expect to be in the finish.”
Bella Bling is a daughter of former topline mare Baby Bling, which Rue partnered to capture the 2013 Miracle Mile – a win that remains his biggest triumph.
āThe Miracle Mile will never be topped,” Rue said. “It’s one of those races everyone would like to win.”
