Santa Casa Lane in the fast lane

Their last harness racing trip to Mildura didn’t go anywhere near the way he hoped, but South Australian horseman Jeremy Seal is prepared to have “another go”.

Making a successful debut at Globe Derby on May 13, Santa Casa Lane (American Ideal) was then taken over the border in an attempt to win his Vicbred bonus.

Unfortunately for connections and punters, Santa Casa Lane choked down as a $1.95 favourite before finishing last, beaten 280 metres.

“He just got over excited that night and choked down,” Seal said. “He charged the gate and was fired up which led to his downfall.

“I’ve changed a bit of gear since then and he has been a lot better. He’s shown he has ability, but has a lot to learn.

“I think it just comes down to maturity and experience all while teaching him to settle…especially not to see the mobile and charge!”

Racing tractably closer to home, Santa Casa Lane has won his two subsequent starts, including Globe Derby lSaturday night.

As such, Seal has decided to nominate the three-year-old son of American Ideal for Friday’s Mildura program.

“Everything he does he is usually relaxed, but at races it’s been a different story,” Seal said. “I’ve been happier with each of his starts since Mildura and Saturday night has given me the confidence to go back over to try and win that bonus.

“If he happens to win I will discuss with his owners about tipping him out for four to six weeks.”

With Michael Smith in the cart, Santa Casa Lane led throughout from barrier three to account for Tonkawaikon and Call Me Sir in 1:58.7 over 1800 metres.
