Harness racing trainer Russell Jack achieved a career highlight tonight (Nov. 19) when his two-year-old pacer, School Captain (Captaintreacherous), took out the $300,000 G1 Breeders Crown final for 2YO pacing colts and geldings at Tabcorp Park, Melton.
Driven by his son Nathan Jack, School Captain was able to lead off the mobile from his handy barrier draw (2) and in the process, park out race favourite, The Lost Storm (Captaintreacherous).
Rated perfectly in front by Jack for the entirety of the 2240m journey, School Captain had the Emma Stewart trained runner off the bit at the 400m mark with only Perfect Class (Captaintreacherous) mounting any challenge in the run home.
It was a forlorn chase however with Jack and School Captain careering away to win by 6.6m and a further 17m back to The Lost Storm in third.
An emotional Nathan Jack gave a cracking salute as the pair crossed the line with the family success clearly meaning a lot to the young reinsman.
“This one’s a bit different, that’s for sure. I had a lot of faith in this horse. Bill and Anne have been great and Dad’s here, it just means a lot,” said Nathan Jack post race.
The result in the G1 feature was a siring trifecta for Captaintreacherous who after the race will assume the leading 2YO sire mantle on money won with a little under 5 weeks left in the season.
School Captain paced the 2240m journey in 2:37.4 with the last mile rate run in 1:53.1.
SCHOOL CAPTAIN REPLAY
It was the second win of his career from just five race day starts.
School Captain is bred and raced by Lauriston Bloodstock and the result gave them a race to race double on Breeders Crown night, a fantastic achievement.
