It could only happen in Australian harness racing….
“Skippy” the kangaroo took centre stage at Lords Raceway in Bendigo tonight (Mar 29) – making a cameo appearance with his mum just after race 8.
The troublesome two kept the crowd entertained for more than 20 minutes as unsuccessful attempts efforts were made to eject them from the track.
Bendigo Harness Racing Club officials, the clerks of course and even horses and drivers waiting for race 9 to get underway were involved in the roundup…to no avail.
Kangaroos are the iconic symbol of Australia, featuring on the coat of arms and coins, emblems, mascots and logos, and a large mob of the marsupials is resident at the Lord’s Raceway complex.
But the ‘roos generally shun the spotlight and only rarely are bold enough to make an appearance on race night – thankfully!

The pair was eventually sent on its way – with race 9 getting underway, somehow, only a couple of minutes past post time!
