Smart 3YO trotting filly a very impressive winner

Three-year-old trotting filly Hayoak (Great Success) took on all ages on Saturday at Globe Derby Park and came away an impressive harness racing victor.

Hayoak defied her starting price of $21 trotting to the lead in the Cardigan Boko Swe @ Bellmoure Park Trotters Handicap (2230m).

Under the vocal urgings of trainer-driver Dean Girardi, from Angle Vale, the filly drew clear to win by 10 metres from Aldebaran Stiles ($3 fav) with Madame Kelly ($26), 4-1/2 metres away third.

Girardi said the win had not been unexpected and he believed the filly was still on the improve.

“I worked her with an older trotter during the week and she had the better of him,” Girardi said.

“This was only her sixth start, and she just keeps improving.”

HAVOAK REPLAY

Hayoak was bred and is owned by longtime trotting enthusiast Peter Cluse.

The filly is out of his former good mare No Renege which won 10 races and was also related to his other talented trotter Siegfried who won 22 races.

Cluse said he was hoping Harness Racing South Australia gave consideration to running a South Australian Oaks for three-year-old fillies this year.

“There has been a shortage of three-year-old trotting fillies but a number of years but there were four engaged tonight, and there are a few others around as well,” Cluse said.

“I believe there are enough to give consideration to staging an Oaks, if not, she will be forced to take on the boys in the Derby.

“The Southern Cross is another aim going forward.”

Hayoak’s win was greeted by Girardi’s heavily pregnant wife Ali, who is three weeks away from giving birth to a daughter.

Another impressive win at Globe Derby was Shazzam, trained at Kudla by Jeremy Seal.

The five-year-old made it four wins in a row when he swept to victory in the 1800-Got-Junk? Pace (1800m).

Shazzam ($4.60) rated a smart 1:56.0 in scoring by six metres from Carly Morgan ($6.50) with Budding Caesar ($34), 7.7 metres away third.

Seal was perplexed by the gelding’s string of wins.

“I have not changed anything with his work but over the last six weeks he suddenly has developed a love of racing,” Seal said.

“He even enjoys his trackwork.

“Tonight he loved sitting back off a good tempo and rounded them up to win easily.

“When he first came across from Melbourne he worked and raced like he just a few wins in him, but now he has changed it all around. I’m going to enjoy it.”

Shazzam was driven by Samantha Pascoe who made it a winning double having won the previous race, the Platinum Services SA Pace (1800m) with her favourite Van Mara which she also owns and trains.

Van Mara ($3.60) came out quickly from gate three and was able to just find the front.

Pascoe rated the 10-year-old perfectly to win by 3.1 metres from Wrangler ($5) with Jimmy Locke ($18), 3.4 metres away third.
