The connections of talented former New Zealand three-year-old Son Of Mac (American Ideal) recently paid the late entry fee to contest this year’s harness racing Breeders Crown Series.
And it is shaping as a prudent investment after the son of American Ideal outclassed his older rivals in the The Big Screen Company Pace at Melton on Friday night.
Sent out a prohibitive $1.04 favorite, Son Of Mac bounded straight to the lead and was never headed thereafter with trainer driver Kyle Marshall releasing the reins at the 400 metre mark holding a 14 metre margin on the line in a mile rate of 1:54.5.
Marshall relocated to the Cranbourne Training Centre from New Zealand with a team of six horses three months ago.
“I had a stint here with Brent Lilley nine years ago and as things progressed I had the right team together to make the move here to Australia,” Marshall said.
“Cranbourne has been fantastic and providing the facilities that I would never be able to work with back home, and it has given me the opportunity to get level with some of the bigger trainers and get the horses fit,” he said.
Marshall said Son Of Mac would be aimed at the Victoria Derby in October.
“He’ll race again here in a fortnight and then I’ll give him a 10-day break and bring him back for the Derby heats and then the Breeders Crown,” he said.
“He’s quite tough and does his best work late in his races so the 2700 metres of the Derby should be right up his alley.”
