Outstanding colt Bay of Biscay (Somebeachsomewhere) served notice that he will take beating in next weeks final when he dived through to snatch victory in the Lather up @Woodlands stud Breeders Crown semi final for 3YO colts and geldings at Melton last night.
Despite his recent good form, punters elected to support last weekās Tasmanian Derby winner Kingman a firm favourite ahead of his stablemates Some American and Bay of Biscay.
Jackie Barker abroad Some American steered her colt to a clear lead with Bay of Biscay settling behind the leader. Kingman could not hold out the other two and he had to race three back on the rails.Ā
The race was unchanged until Kingman moved off the rails in the back straight to edge up closer to the leaders. Some American kicked clear but Bay of Biscay angled for the inside run and driver James Herbertson allowed him to score a narrow win over the luckless Some American with Kingman third.
Bay of Biscay was placed in both the New South Wales and Queensland Derbies as well as finishing a close second in Australiaās richest race the Eureka at Menangle in September. He then finished a close fourth in the Victoria Derby so he would be a deserving winner of next weekās Final.
However no one would begrudge runner up Some American if he was to win the Final. The American Ideal colt has now finished a close second at his last seven appearances.Ā
The second semi final saw long odds on favourite Miki To Success (Always B Miki) give punters plenty of anxious moments before falling in to hold off a fast finishing Ravishing Sloy with Collective Works third.
Miki To Success was made to work before he was able to secure the lead. Ravishing Sloy had shown dazzling speed from the mobile. Running freely along the front Miki To Success cleared away but Ravishing Sloy under the urging of his driver Nathan Jack slowly started to make ground but in a driving finish failed by a neck with Collective Works a further 10 metres away third.
Despite his narrow win Miki to Success ran a fast 1.53.7 for the 2240 metres notably quicker than Bay of Biscay who ran 1.56.5.
