Tasmanian Harness Highlights

This weekend the $12,000 Launceston Mile is the feature race on Sunday where Easter Cup winner Scotterwillrev clashes with Cool Water Paddy in the small but select field.

Harness racing will also be held in Hobart on Friday night, with a strong Tasmanian presence at both Melton and Menangle on Saturday night.

The Stars

Cool Water Paddy – demonstrated his class with a dominant win in the fast class race on Sunday evening in Hobart when scoring a five-metre win. The Juanita McKenzie-trained pacer will be chasing a hat-trick of wins when he contests Sunday’s Launceston Mile, a race he won last year.

Starofremembrance – broke through for an overdue win in Hobart on Sunday night. The Paul Medhurst-trained mare had 16 starts in the state for five placings before breaking through for her first Tasmanian win.

Claiming Novice Drivers – the new Claiming Novice Drivers policy in the state is seeing new names in the winner’s circle, including Kayleb Williams and Bronte Miller, who drove doubles in Launceston and Hannah Van Dongen and Jordan Chibnall with winners in Hobart.

Tammy Langley – extended her lead on the female trainer’s premiership with a weekend treble. All three winners were driven by Dylan Ford, including Pawnbrokers Lad and Jackson Neptune in Hobart.

Conor Crook – moved into second spot on the state trainer’s premiership after a weekend double, including consistent mare Gone And Forgotten and Iden Miss Lucy, who broke her maiden on Sunday.

Trial File

Hobart – Monday evening
The first trial was for the two-year-olds over 1609 metres was taken out by the Rodney Ashwood-trained and driven Hivoltage Glenwood, who led all the way and was untroubled to score by 15.7 metres in 2m 6.62s.

Yourockanna is a six-year-old Rock N Roll Heaven mare who has won 10 races in her career stepped out in the state for the first time of her career in the final trial. Trainer-driver Rodney Ashwood settled the mare last of the four-horse field before leading up the one-wide line over the final 1200 metres, with the mare racing away from her rivals at the top of the home straight to score an 11.8-metre victory in a mile rate of 2m 4.86s.

Week Ahead

Friday: Hobart is the venue for Friday night racing with an eight-race card commencing at 18:30.

Saturday: Trials will be held at Carrick Park from 9:00.

Plenty of Tasmanian interest at Menangle in Sydney, with Ignatius contesting a Group 3 event, Zhukov Leis contesting a no higher than 95 event and Jigamaroo engaged in the seventh race of the night. All three horses are prepared by James Rattray, who will drive Ignatius and Zhukov Leis, while former Tasmanian Charlie Castles will drive Jigamaroo.

At Melton, the Rodney Ashwood-trained Still Hungover will contest a $20,000 mares event restricted to horses rated between 70 to 89, with Rodney’s son Alex booked for the drive. Tasmanian owned Max Delight will compete in the free-for-all event at the same meeting.

Sunday: The Launceston Pacing Club stages a nine-race card featuring the $12,000 Launceston Mile. The meeting gets underway at 17:07.
