The Eureka is on the radar for Captain Hammerhead

A rousing performance on Saturday night has David Moran excited on where Captain Hammerhead (Captaintreacherous) can head in 2024 and beyond.

The four-year-old was able to find the line first in the Hygain Pace at Melton Entertainment Park.

“He has pulled up really well and is looking good,” trainer-driver Moran said.

The Group 1 – The Rising Sun, which is apart of Queensland’s winter carnival, is the next assignment that Moran and Captain Hammerhead will be hoping to feature in.

“We are going to try and get him a berth in that race (The Rising Sun) if we can. I think off his last few starts, I would be pretty surprised if he couldn’t get a go at It,” he said. “The Eureka providing everything goes well and everything is good in himself, that will be the next aim.”

The pacer has already amassed over $200,000 in just 23-starts, which includes nine-wins. The 36-year-old reinsman has seen the son out of Rogers Passion continue to grow and develop.

“He is a very progressive horse, he has got a lot better with age,” he said.“Racing in The Eureka and the Chariots of Fire last year, it has just sort of really upped him as a horse. He is starting to really grow into himself.

“He is learning to follow speed better and he is adjusting to racing against high-quality horses. I think that will hold him in pretty good stead moving forward.”

The Kialla horseman thinks his bay horse can target some of Australia’s biggest pacing features.

“Definitely, he can target those races (Victoria Cup, Hunter Cup, and the Inter Dominion). The longer distance will do him good. He is starting to develop into a really nice horse now,” he said.
