Young driver Jocelyn Young took home her first metropolitan winner at Gloucester Park on Friday night behind the Nathan Turvey trained Wynberg Terror. Sent out at odds of 20/1, Wynberg Terror was not fancied by harness racing punters after finishing 11th at his last start for champion driver Anthony Butt.
The Possum, as she is known in her home town of Pinjarra, sent the brown gelding to the breeze soon after the start and settled her steed after a slow first quarter. Siding up with the leader Extreme Dreams at the 400m mark, Jocelyn looked to have every runner beaten by the point of the bend. Finding ground late was the Debbie Padberg trained Must Be Nice who issued a final challenge under hard driving from Chris Voak, but was unable to gain the upper hand from Wynberg Terror whose nose was just in front on the line.
“I was a little surprised, I thought Voaky had me being on the outside, but I was extremely happy” said Jocelyn to GPTV after the run.
“It’s come a little sooner than I would have expected, it’s good to have Nathan (Turvey) who’s been very good to me”.
Young chose to come to town for one race after knocking back regular drives at the country front Wagin meeting on the same night – a move that has paid dividends and, according to her boss, could potentially gain her future starts at Gloucester Park metropolitan meetings.
“I left the decision up to her, I told her she could have the drive on Friday Night… I knew she could drive here at GP and we needed the barrier… It all worked out well in the end” – Nathan Turvey.
