Captaintreacherous filly Jewel Melody secured her position as Australia’s richest two-year-old this season with a commanding victory in harness racing’s $156,000 Group 1 Albion Park Gold Final in Queensland on Saturday (Jul.16).
The win in the feature pushed her earnings to $249,888 in her debut season.
Jewel Melody has only had 10 starts this year and victories in the Bathurst Gold Tiara, Australian Pacing Gold and Albion Park Gold Final – all at Group 1 level – have aided in her position.
Her recent success was no surprise.
The Bernie Hewitt-prepared filly stepped out in the feature as the $1.09 favourite and she delivered what punters expected.
Leading throughout, Jewel Melody spaced her rivals winning by more than 18m in a mile rate of 1:55.6.
JEWEL MELODY REPLAY
This gave Hewitt his seventh Group 1 win as a trainer and fifth as a driver with the majority of his wins at this level obtained this season thanks to Jewel Melody and his other talented pacer Ripp (Somebeachsomewhere).
