Harness racing trainer Jarrod Alchin did not even know he won tonight’s $104,000 Group 1 Albion Park Gold Final in Queensland with my Ultimate Levi.
With commitments at Menangle, Alchin was on track driving his brother’s (trainer Rickie Alchin) trotter Tough Monarch, with that race starting just after My Ultimate Levi’s victory.
It was not until Alchin was returning to scale after finishing fourth with Tough Monarch that he heard from the on course announcer that he just trained another Group 1 winner.
My Ultimate Levi caused a boil over in the feature at starting odds of $18.
Driven by Nathan Dawson, the two-year-old son of Betting Line raced three back along the pegs as the favourite Cat King Cole held the lead from barrier one.
With a fast first quarter of 26.6 seconds, the next three quarters were 31.4, 28.5 and 29.3 seconds.
Dawson was able to angle My Ultimate Levi into the sprint lane where he went on to win by more than a metre over I Am Sparta and Harley Blue with the public elect finishing fourth.
“He was a lot better tonight and got keen up the back when backed off the tempo but he got the right split and it worked out well,” Dawson said.
“It’s always a dream to win a Group 1 so to get two in one season is great.”
Dawson won the Group 1 Garrards Redcliffe Yearling Sales Series Final with Teddy Disco in June.
As for My Ultimate Levi, he clocked a personal best mile rate of 1:55.6 tonight and has now had 10 starts for three wins and four placings.
This was also Alchin’s second Group 1 winner for the season, having also won the Group 1 Australian Pacing Gold Bullion Final with My Ultimate Byron at Menangle in April.
