“Every horse that we’ve bred, except for one, has won.”
The speaker is successful Tamborine trainer and breeder Darren McCall, who along with wife Karina Johansen, will present three yearlings at the Garrard’s Redcliffe Yearling Sale at Redcliffe Paceway on Sunday, April 6.
The list of horses bred by McCall and Johansen includes the Albion Park winners Sii Sempre Tilly, Rock It Baby and Lovin Miss Dixie, last season’s juvenile winner Cheeky Baby and the Cups-winning trotter Rocknroll Baby.
The pick of the McCall consignment is Lot 21, a bay colt by the thrice Group 1 winner and million dollar earner Colt Thirty One and one of the first crop of the young Mach Three stallion.

He’s the first foal of the good Menangle winner Ohoka Royal NZ (1:56), a winner of 18 races and $138,350 in stakes.
The colt’s grand-dam, Elle Bea Royal, the dam of two winners, is a half-sister to seven winners including the Group 2 NZ Thames Pacing Cup and Inter Dominion heat winner Jagged Account 1:54.2 ($326,835), Boro Magic (1:55.3), the NZ Northland Cup victor Our Fred and to Royal Rascal, dam of the Echuca Cup winner Skippy Rascal 1:53.6 ($225,719) and Twilight Rascal (1:55.4).
“I really love this colt. He’s long barrelled just like his mother. He’s got a presence about him,” McCall said.
Lot 8, a lovely bay filly, is a product of the three-time Miracle Mile hero and Horse of the Year King Of Swing ($3.3 million) and a member of the initial crop of the Rocknroll Hanover pacing sensation.
She’s the first foal of the Albion Park winner and QBred Triad and Redcliffe Sales Classic finalist Cupcakesnwhipcream 1:56.1 ($76,387), who belongs to a ‘black type’ North American family.
“She got good conformation, has nice size and is a natural paddock pacer,” McCall said.
Rounding out the McCall-Johansen draft is Lot 40, a filly by the brilliant young Captaintreacherous import Capt Midnight (1:48.6), whose first crop are current two-year-olds.
The Fake Left mare Three Kisses NZ, the dam of the filly, won 10 races including one at Menangle and $96,702 in stakes and took a mile mark of 1:53.3.
Her first foal, the two-year-old Piccolo Diavolo, is going to the qualifying trials this week.
A member of the prolific ‘Tactics’ family in New Zealand, the filly is a racy type who looks likely to be an early goer.
