Toby Lynn didn’t have long to wait for his first driving success, with the 22-year-old claiming the milestone harness racing victory at just his third attempt.
On board Bettor My Dreamz NZ (Bettor’s Delight) for his dad Brad, Toby was able to dictate terms in the fourth at Wagin on Friday night over the 2180m trip to take the win in 2:06:1.
“It was very good, couldn’t have asked for a better first night of driving,
“Learnt a lot and it was a lot more fun and better than trials.” Toby Lynn said.
With Brad Lynn taking up training in 2010, Toby has since been immersed in the industry, finally taking the plunge into race driving this season after completing his trials last week.
Although he admits he had never intended on driving in races, he changed his mind in more recent times after being exposed to more horses outside of their stables.
“I was just going to drive a couple of horses for dad at trials with problems, then a couple of people at the track started giving me a go in trials and it was really enjoyable, and lots of other drivers were giving me sh*t, asking when I’m going to get my licence.”
Attributing a lot of what he now knows to what he learnt from the late Terry Trewenack, Lynn made mention that he has been offered help and has been given tips by numerous people in the Pinjarra area, learning a lot from driving the youngsters at home who had their issues.
With no goals in his immediate sights, Toby just hopes to continue to learn and see how this driving caper goes.
BETTOR MY DREAMZ REPLAY
Lynns introduction to the industry albeit a relatively traditional one, it was one that took a little longer to grow on him, with his involvement not beginning until he was well into his teen years.
“My grandmother’s side of the family is heavily involved, the Howlett family,
“Then dads brother Criag Lynn got involved, and then dad got a sniff and left his carpentry business to learn with Trevor Warwick,
“I didn’t think much of it at first in my earlier years, but then mum and dad got the farm in Birchmont and it kept growing on me and I started enjoying it,
“Once I started giving dad a hand, I loved it and wouldn’t change it.”
Bettor My Dreamz NZ, who hasn’t won since January 2021, broke a 36-start losing sequence, winning at $9 odds on Friday night for the Lynn stable. Lynn had a memorable first night in the cart with four drives in his book, for a win and two placings.
