It was a tough day on the track for the Grenfell trainers who made their way to Parkes on Tuesday for the Parkes Harness Racing Club's Australia Day meeting.
Local trainer Mark Hewitt had one of his horses entered on the night in Race Two the TAB App Australia Day Pace with Maudie's Delight and drove the Stan Townsend trained Be Good Benny in Race Seven while Grenfell trainer Peter McFarlane had two horses running with Honeybeedee in Race Five and Holy Camp Capryhse in the final race of the night.
It wasn't a great night for the Mark Hewitt trained Maudie's Delight who came in eighth in the 1660m TAB App Australia Day Pace.
The Hewitt driven mare started off the race in the middle of the second row and had a hard time trying to keep up with the mile rating of 1.59.4 finishing up over four lengths behind the leader.
Peter McFarlane would have hoped for a better outcome in Race 5 of the night finishing up in seventh place in the 1660m Joe Dumesny Memorial with the three-year-old filly Honeybeedee.
Starting in the front row the Michael Day Junior driven filly had a good start before connecting with eventual third place winner Count Montecarlo on the first corner. Day Junior recovered the young horse nicely managing to keep up out wide with Linx Downs who was ahead at the time.
By the end of the first lap Day Junior and Honeybeedee found themselves in behind the two-wide front row before the leaders stepped it up a gear and pulled away from the Grenfell mare.
After a protest was lodged Runpoprun trained by Peter Wright and driven by Laura Rusten ended up being called the winner paying $34, followed by the Josh Turnbull trained Linx Downs ($3.70) driven by Nathan Turnbull and Count Montecarlo ($11) trained and driven by Tony Higgs.
Though not as exciting as his stablemate's run the McFarlane trained Holy Camp Caprhyse only did a little better than Honeybeedee for the Grenfell trainer coming in fifth in Race Seven the 2040m Byrne Clothing Pace.
Just coming in before the six-year-old Grenfell mare was the Mark Hewitt driven Be Good Benny. Trained by Stan Townsend the four-year-old gelding started off the race as the $2.70 favourite. Coming into the first corner Be Good Benny tossed his head and was above the bit making it a tough job for Hewitt falling from third towards the middle of the pack and around 10 lengths behind the leader by halfway through the first lap. Hewitt manage to move back up to third by the bell however he started to fall back when he was overtaken out wide by the eventual winner Hardliner trained by Robert Schweickle and driven by Brett Hutchings.
