Connections expressed their concern with Expensive Ego’s effort last start but the horse did all the talking at harness racing’s Menangle track on Saturday night.
The four-year-old son of Rock N Roll Heaven won in a scintillating 1:48.7.
There was some confusion around Expensive Ego’s winning mile rate and it being a four-year-old track record, however, Harnesslink can reveal that is not the case.
On the Club Menangle website is a list of track records and the four-year-old track record published of 1:48.8 held jointly by Have Faith In Me and Jilliby Kung Fu, is for a four-year-old only race. Click here to see.
After all, Have Faith In Me did win the 2016 Miracle Mile as a four-year-old in 1:47.5.
So while Expensive Ego’s win does not give him the title of a four-year-old track record holder, as his race was for all ages, it was the third time he has won in a sub 1:50 mile rate.
Expensive Ego finished fifth in last week’s Group 1 Len Smith Mile won by The Black Prince and driver Luke McCarthy expected more of the Chariots Of Fire winner.
“I thought he (Expensive Ego) was a touch unders in the Len Smith (he started $1.35 favourite),” McCarthy said this week.
With a strong win alongside his name, Expensive Ego will now be aimed at the upcoming Inter Dominion series that starts on November 27 at Menangle.
He is currently ranked in the top 10 for the rich series.
