Trio of Captains for Simmonds

The Lakes breeder Rob Simmonds will present three Captain Ahab colts at the 2025 APG Perth Yearling Sale on Sunday.

Simmonds had an excellent 2024 sale, selling two Captain Ahab colts – one for $37,000 and the other for $26,000.

He has built his broodmare band to 10.

“We have three nice yearlings for the sale and we are hopeful they do well,” Simmonds said

“All three are by Captain Ahab and he has had a big start with his first crop of 2YOs.

“They are well put together colts with excellent conformation and lovely temperaments.

“They are quick learners and easy to handle. They won’t take much to make them racehorses.

“All three colts are there to be sold.” Simmonds said Lot 346, a colt from four-time winner The Rain (2.00.4, $25K) was probably his pick of the trio.

The Rain is the dam of tough gelding Luke Attack (1.57, $60K).

This colt’s grandam, Little Miss Rain, is a half sister to Talk To Me, dam of champion fillies Mother Courage (1.56.9, $462K) and Tandias Courage (1.53.6, $305K) and grandam of Group 1 winner Aardies Express (1.48.9, $424K).

“The Rain’s yearling is a leggy, stylish colt with a look at me presence. I really like this family and I wouldn’t be worried if I brought him home,” Simmonds said. “Lot 331, out of Pass The Magic, is a big strong powerful colt “The Just Like Shannon colt (Lot 332) is built for speed and should run early.”

Captain Ahab’s first crop of 2YOs have really come out firing. He has had seven starters in the first month of 2YO racing for 2025.

Exciting filly Chefs Kiss was his first winner when she won a heat of the $125,000 APG 2YO fillies classic on February 18. She will be highly fancied for the final on Friday night.

Improving filly El Raes Girl also qualified for the final.

Speedy colt Southerner was runner-up in the $30,000 Western Crown final and Spot On Molly was third at her Pinjarra debut on January 27.

The three colts are all double Westbred eligible.
