Romsey-based harness racing trainer Chris Svanosio has trained and driven Trixton gelding Arcee Phoenix to win tonight’s (Sep. 16) Group One $100,000 Haras Des Trotteurs Vicbred Super Series Final for 4YO Trotting Entires and Geldings at Tabcorp Park Melton.
Svanosio was quoted by media during the week as saying Arcee Phoenix would be his best chance, but he didn’t think there would be much between him and stablemate Aroha Koe the way the barriers had fallen.
As it turned out barriers didn’t matter because Aroha Koe galloped out mid race, as 100-1 tearaway leader Gaelic Lad led the field at a torrid pace, while Arcee Phoenix got well back in the running a long way from the leaders.
At the turn the front runner Gaelic Lad started to tire and Arcee Phoenix after mounting a big run, picked up the leaders and went on to run out a comfortable winner.
“I didn’t know if I was going to catch it (Gaelic Lad), I could barely see it, it was that far in front of me,” Svanosio said after the race.
“I was hoping I could get close enough when I had to make my run and then the leader started to get tired and my bloke still had plenty to give,” he said.
ARCEE PHOENIX REPLAY
The victory tonight gave Arcee Phoenix his 8th win from 22 starts and increased his career earnings to over $160,000. His winning time of 2:42.5 equated to a slick 1:56.5 mile rate, thanks to the tearaway tactics of the leader who tired to finish a game fourth. Keyang Chucky made up a lot of ground to run into second, with Courage Stride also finishing powerfully for third.
