Ultimate Machete colt Smooth Machete made a winning race track debut when he scored an easy harness racing victory in the Kardz R Us Pace in Hobart on Sunday night.
Drifting from $2.50 out to $2.70 on the Tasracing Official Price, reinsman Mark Yole made the most of the pole draw, with the two-year-old pacer able to lead in the mile event.
After quarters of 29.7s, 30.8s and 29.3s, the colt was able to dash away in 28.5s final section to score by 11m over Fearless Stride and Didyalousaroosta in 1m 58.3s.
The win came as no surprise to trainer Kelly Reggett.
“He has always been a nice horse, and we have always thought he had something there.
“We took him to the trials just over a fortnight ago, and was really happy with him going 2:03 and home in 58.0.
“He really came on in the week and a half prior to Friday night, so we were expecting a forward showing. I was just a little unsure how he would run the gate as trials are different to race day,” said Reggett.
Kelly acknowledged it hasn’t been smooth sailing with the pacer, who she credits the assistance of her father Zane Medhurst and fellow trainer Paul Ashwood.
The pacer is eligible for the Group 3 Dandy Patch for two-year-olds, which commences with heats in late October, but first, the pacer will look towards another two-year-old feature.
“We plan to see how he pulls up over the next couple of days, and then we will head to one of the heats of the Sweepstakes (in late August), and then we will see what happens there, but all going well we will head to the Dandy Patch.”
Smooth Machete, the first live foal to race out of the Mcardle mare Sparkling, was bred by Kelly and her husband Mark and is raced by the duo in partnership with Chris and Sue Bailey.
“Sparkling took a lot to get in foal to start with, then nothing went to plan with her first foal and we lost that, and we currently have a For A Reason yearling filly that is coming along nicely,” said Reggett.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s father, Zane is recovering from a recent operation as a result of injuries sustained from a fall in his role of a Clerk of the course from the meeting held on Good Friday.
