Rockbank-based trainer Brian Kiesey, who was born on Christmas Day 1960, sadly passed away on Sunday, November 17 aged 64.

Brian Kiesey

Kiesey loved nothing more than being around his horses, spending many hours each day with them and giving them undivided attention.

He was part of harness racing since working for Kilmore trainer Bob Knight before venturing out on his own.

During his time in Kilmore, Kiesey was involved in a car dealership business at one stage, but it was the horses that always drew his attention.

He shifted to St Arnaud for a short time and became friendly with local trainer Des Richards, who described him as being dedicated to his horses which took priority over everything else.

Prolific breeder/owner Fred Crews also paid tribute to Kiesey, saying “his way with horses was something special”.

Kiesey’s first horse was Meekatharra Miner, a winner of 11 races with 26 placings from 151 outings. Others to come along in recent times were Admiral Of The Fleet, Maori Franklin, Macho Maori and Maori Duchess, with his all-time favourite being Wagon Apollo-Ritadaft gelding Master Kiesey. He was foaled in 2000 and retired from racing in 2016 with a record of 21 wins and 68 placings from 375 outings for stakes in excess of $146,000.

In all, Kiesey trained 129 career winners after getting his licence in the mid-1990s.

He was troubled by kidney disease and over the past six months or so was regularly receiving treatment.

Kiesey’s other love outside the horses was musical theatre, and he attended numerous productions.

He is survived by father Colin, sisters Kelly and Jenny and long-time partner Nicky.

His funeral will be held at the Crick Chapel, Memorial Park, Fawkner this Thursday, commencing at 2.45pm.

HRV sends its sincere condolences to the Kiesey family.
