Prominent harness racing trainer-driver Kevin Murray passed away on Sunday, May 19 at the age of 90.

A former Kiwi who came to Australia with a horse named Grand Charge, Kevin had met the late Neil Evans who had taken his trotter Mighty Miller to compete in the Auckland Inter Dominion series.

This gave him thoughts about crossing the Tasman and settling in Victoria, which was to eventuate in 1966.

Neil provided a home and stables for Kevin in Wallan where he was based for many years.

Kevin trained and drove a number of feature winners including Reteps Pride, Silken, Freedom Day, Alphalite and First Dillon. He also won Ararat Pacing Cups with Yallara, Field Orphan and Butleigh.

Kevin was victorious aboard the outstanding three-year-old Gyro, who was trained by Jack (JP) McKay, on a number of occasions. He also trained and drove Skipper Don (trotter) and Good To Win to multiple victories.

He worked for many years helping David Aiken at Avenel and was also a regular barrier attendant at Seymour races.

Kevin Murray leaves a wonderful legacy to harness racing and Harness Racing Victoria sends sincere condolences and thoughts to his family and friends.
