Vale Patricia Ellis passes

Many in horse and harness racing industries are mourning the passing at the weekend of Dr Patricia ‘Trish’ Ellis, who has been celebrated as a trusted veterinarian and friend.

Dr Ellis “did a mountain of work” for harness racing stretching back to Moonee Valley in the 1980s, continuing on to quarantine controls amid equine influenza and involvement with Harness Racing Victoria’s retention barn.

Awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2013 for significant service to veterinary science, Dr Ellis served on numerous Australian and international committees and boards and was praised for her work in the development of quarantine and biosecurity protocols.

Dr Ellis was accredited with being the first female president of Equine Veterinarians Australia and held principal veterinary roles with government and industry organisations including the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities.

The Yarra Valley resident was also on the board of directors of Racing Analytical Services, Australia’s largest independent drug testing laboratory which includes Victorian harness racing among its racing authorities.

Harness Racing Victoria is saddened by Dr Ellis’ passing and shares its condolences with her family, friends and colleagues.
