Harness racing has lost one of its most respected and beloved figures with the recent passing of Reg Trevean. Following a courageous 16-month battle, Reg succumbed to cancer. A quiet achiever with a deep passion for the sport, Reg’s career spanned over four decades, two states, and hundreds of race victories. His impact on the industry will be remembered long beyond the finish line.

Building a Champion’s Resume
Reg Trevean’s career began in Victoria, where he established himself as a trainer of the highest caliber during the 1980s and 1990s. His ability to condition trotters and pacers alike to peak performance was well-known, and his stables regularly sent out winners on country and metropolitan tracks.
Among his many career highlights were two standout Group 1 victories:
- The 1993 Australasian Trotters Championship with Helium, and
- The 1995 Gold Nugget with Slick Vance
His overall career tally included around 400 winners, with earnings that reflected both quality and consistency. Horses like Allwoods Chief, Lord Greystoke, Phoenician, Lord Jeffrey, Heir To Greystoke, Old Kinderhook, Ok Prospect, Champagne Prince, Unique Style, Nutfield, and Young Vance gave Reg frequent visits to the winner’s circle and further solidified his status as a master horseman.
A New Chapter in South Australia
In 1998, Reg moved his training operations to South Australia, where he quickly became a respected figure on and off the track. His ability to adapt and succeed in a new environment was evident as he captured several prestigious titles, including:
- South Australian Trotters Cup
- Strathalbyn Trotters Cup
- Port Pirie Pacing Cup
- Kapunda Pacing Cup
Yet, Reg’s contributions extended far beyond race results. He became a pillar of the South Australian Square Trotters Association, serving as President for many years and advocating tirelessly for the development of trotting. His leadership, diplomacy, and hands-on involvement earned him Life Membership—a reflection of the respect he garnered from his peers.
A Humble Giant of the Game
Reg Trevean’s humility and grace were as notable as his victories. Fellow trainers and drivers frequently speak of his generosity, his patience with young people in the industry, and his tireless support for grassroots racing. He represented everything positive about the harness racing community: dedication, loyalty, and integrity.
At home, Reg was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife Sharon, four daughters, and six grandchildren, all of whom he adored and proudly supported.
Honouring His Legacy
A memorial service to celebrate Reg’s life and career will be held at:
Globe Derby Park Committee Room
Friday 30th May at 1:00 PM
In a fitting tribute, the Globe Derby meeting has already honored his memory with the naming of the “Reg Trevean, Ray Goble, Jeff Procter Life Members of SA Square Trotters Handicap”, a race that reflects not only his achievements but his spirit of camaraderie and service.
Final Word
Reg Trevean’s story is one of endurance, excellence, and heart. He trained champions, led with vision, and left a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of harness racing professionals.
As the sulkies roll on without him, the mark he made will remain indelible—etched in record books, cherished in memories, and celebrated at every trotting event where passion meets performance.
