Greg Sugars completed a winning treble when the Kari Males trained mare Mona Mia (Sportswriter) made a long awaited return to the harness racing winning list at Melton on Saturday night.
Mona Mia settled at the rear of the field as the leader and $3.90 favorite Hes Charlies Angel tended to over race reeling off the first 800 metres of the last mile in a slick 56.6 seconds before heading down the back straight in 28.1.
Sugars took off from last with 600 metres to travel and Mona Mia ($6) made a sustained run to grab the lead in the concluding stages scoring by a metre and a half from Diamond Shooz and Hes Charlies Angel.

Sugars said the race panned out well for Mona Mia who hadn’t been seen in the winnerās stall since winning at Ballarat in December 2021.
āThe race was run to suit for the backmarkers with the leader going so quickly,ā Sugars said.
āShe did a good job because I didnāt think she could keep going after coming one wide from such a long way back,ā he said.
Earlier in the night Sugars saluted on the royally bred trotter Love Gun who is trained by his wife Jess Tubbs.
Sent out a $2.80 favorite, Love Gun settled mid field in the running line before Sugars pulled out three wide with 500 metres to travel and the son of Love You stormed down the middle of the track to score from Kyvalley Pierro and Overandout.
āWe’ve liked him since he arrived in our stable late last year,ā he said.
āHe’s a strong trotter who is starting to put it altogether.ā
