Written In Silk to write her next winning chapter

Written In Silk (Sportswriter) will be looking to continue her perfect start since joining the Stephen Clarke harness racing stable when she lines up in the Catanach’s Jewellers Pace at Melton Entertainment Park.

The mare has an unblemished five-race winning streak since teaming up with the Ross Creek stable.

Clarke, 46, acquired the six-year-old from the Tasmanian-based Yole stable before the daughter of Sportswriter started her winning ways on June 5 at headquarters.

“She has been looking good in the winner’s circle lately,” Clarke laughed. “We have been more than happy with her; she has been a great acquisition to the stable.

“We think she has got above average ability, and she won her last two or three with the plugs in.”

The winner of 12 races from 77 starts has drawn one for the $15,000 event this Saturday night.

“She has good gate speed and does everything right in her runs,” Clarke said. “This race looked good for her and it was based on national ratings.

“You are not going to come around a lot of horses, they are going to have to come around her.”

Clarke is hopeful his pacer can continue to climb the ranks.

“If we go good this week, I think there is a mares’ race we can target the following week,” he said.

“We will just pick and choose – she seems to be durable and able to run week in, week out.

“We are hoping she can make the step-up in grade and can go a lot further than this.”

Clarke’s children Reagan and Connor have driven Written In Silk to success, and it will be the latter who will partner the winner of over $73,000 on Saturday.

“Reagan has just started driving and it is a metro meeting (so) she can’t drive. She is probably a little bit shattered,” he said.

The 17-year-old reinswoman has driven the pacer to four out of the last five consecutive victories with Connor saluting on the one occasion.

Last-start winner, the Andy Gath-prepared Cool Night has drawn five.

The Catanach’s Jewellers Pace is set to go at 5.30pm.
