Trois-Rivieres, QC – Glass Shadow, who has been winless in his last 14 starts, pulled off a stunning upset at the Hippodrome 3R Sunday, wiring the field in the Invitational Pace for driver Gaetan Lamy at odds of 23-1, paying $49.70 to win.
Leaving from post five, veteran driver Gaetan Lamy sent Glass Shadow right to the lead with Rainbow Palace (Francis Picard) grabbing the two-hole spot and the 8/5 favorite, Ufdragons Rocket and driver Stephane Gendron, parked out first-over from the start.
Gendron tried to urge Ufdragons Rocket to the front, but Lamy and Glass Shadow said no as they sped to the opening quarter in :57.1. Gendron tried again with Ufdragons Rocket as they went to the half, but again Glass Shadow said no. They went to the half mile in :55.3.
They raced the same, only now Crombie A and driver Stephane Brosseau had joined the hunt in second over position, UFdragons Rocket was still game being parked out from the start as they sped to the three-quarters in 1:25.3.
Lamy opened up a little daylight with Glass Shadow as they started down the stretch, but started to bear out as Ufdragons Rocket began to fade as Rainbow Palace came up the passing lane and Crombie A found room to mount a challenge.
But Lamy and Glass Shadow were the best today, holding off Crombie A to win by a half-length in 1:55.2. Rainbow Palace was third.
The last time Glass Shadow had won a race, was back on April 30 at H3R. Trained and owned by Marc Andre Cormier of Princeville, it was the fifth win this year for the six-year-old gelded son of Shadow Play.
Track Notes: With sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80's, H3R's half mile oval was razor sharp as five horses (half of the race card) registered lifetime marks.
The fastest mile on the program came in the seventh race pace, as Solid Performance and driver Pascal Berube pulled away from the field in the backstretch, winning by eleven and one-quarter lengths in 1:54.2, making it a trainer/owner double for Marc Andre Cormier
Live racing will resume at H3R next Sunday, first race post time at 12:30 pm. For more information, visit www.quebecjockeyclub.com.
