Wings Of Green became the first of three winners for freshman sire Green Manalishi in the third Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots for two-year-old trotting fillies as she upset in the opening division on Tuesday (Aug. 6) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
She was fourth through the opening half after leaving from the eighth hole for Trevor Henry. The reinsman pulled her off the pylons approaching the final turn, and the filly pushed into contention first-over. She put leader Green Glider (Sylvain Filion) under duress coming down the stretch and forged three-quarters-of-a-length clear to win in 1:58.4. Green Glider made it home before the marauding All Star Angel (Austin Sorrie), who finished third.
WINGS OF GREEN REPLAY
Wings Of Green returned $50.20 in her fourth start, a week after a fourth-place finish in the second Grassroots leg. She has earned $11,600. Paul Davies trains the filly and co-owns her with Nicole Davies.
Bright Green (Green Manalishi) captured the second split in similar fashion. She popped out of third for Louis-Philippe Roy on the final turn and grinded down pacesetter Angelic (Tyler Borth) for the 1:59.2 victory. Angelic fought to the end and was beaten by a neck. Core Resolve (Todd Ratchford) completed the ticket.
BRIGHT GREEN REPLAY
The Eric Nadeau-trained Bright Green broke her maiden with the win in her third start. She closed sharply in both prior starts, the latest of which was a show finish in the Tompkins-Geers. Ecurie CSL of Sorel-Tracy co-owns her with Louis-Philippe Roy Racing of Campbellville.
Ibelieveinangels (Green Manalishi) swooped to the front to take the third division. She swung off cover coming around the final turn and rumbled past rivals en route to a two-and-three-quarter-length score in 1:58.1. Royal Sauce (Doug McNair), who headed the outside flow, finished second over Eartha K (Bob McClure).
IBELIEVEINANGELS REPLAY
Ibelieveinangels opened her career account with the win after three prior unsuccessful tries. She was a game third two starts back in the Grassroots and collected a cheque when stepping up to the Gold level last out. Meg Crone conditions the rookie for W. J. Donovan of Delray Beach.
Rich Girl (Wheeling N Dealin) broke her maiden as she bested the final group in a coast-to-coast effort. Bob McClure pointed the filly to the front from post eight, and she turned away her only challenger in the final quarter to complete the victory in 1:57.4. Marie H (Henry) came home after taking on the leader. D A Dream Girl (Travis Cullen) took show.
RICH GIRL REPLAY
The winner has not missed the board since her debut outing and has earned $21,920 after five starts. She was second in the two previous Grassroots rounds for trainer John Pentland, who co-owns her with Alan Bodin of Napanee.
Henry was the nightās top reinsman with four wins.
Racing resumes at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday, Aug. 8 with a card featuring the Pure Ivory and Millard Farms finals for two-year-old trotting fillies and colts and geldings, respectively.
