Ahundreddollarbill shipped from New York to Ontario and captured the $606,500 Canadian Trotting Classic in a lifetime-best harness racing clocking Saturday at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The son of Chapter Seven watched four opponents fly by him into the first turn and settled into fifth. Winning Ticket (Dave Miller) strung out the field as he blazed through the first quarter in :26.3, but outside challengers quickly reeled him in as he cooled the tempo to a :55.2 half.
Driver Andrew McCarthy, shooting for his second Grand Circuit win of the evening, put Ahundreddollarbill in play with a second-over move and followed favourite Fashion Frenzie (Louis-Philippe Roy) in a march on the leader.
Fashion Frenzie, the local 3/5 favourite, stalled after reducing the lead to a half-length, and Ahundreddollarbill fanned three-wide after passing three-quarters in 1:23.2. Ahundreddollarbill surged off his golden trip and blew past his cover and Winning Ticket in mid-stretch to score in the night’s feature event in 1:52.
In Range (Tim Tetrick) finished second after a ground-saving trip. Winning Ticket was a game third.
AHUNDREDDOLLARBILL REPLAY
Ahundreddollarbill became McCarthy and trainer Tony Alagna’s second Grand Circuit winner of the evening after Abuckabett Hanover won the Simcoe Stakes. Ahundreddollarbill has won 10 times and earned $755,107. He is eight-for-10 this season, with wins in the Empire Breeders Classic and four New York Sire Stakes divisions. Crawford Farms Racing of Syracuse and James Crawford of Erieville own the gelding.
āThis year I really thought I had the best horse in the race,” McCarthy said post-race. “He’s had a little time off and obviously we talked about him unfortunately tying up before the New York Sire Stakes final, but I went second trip with him tonight and he was slick as an eel, so I thought I was in a pretty good spot tonight.”
