The marquee harness racing event of the year at Hanover Raceway, the Dream of Glory, was held on Saturday (Aug. 3).
A field of eight sophomore trotters lined up to compete over the $50,000 in purse. Right off the hop, Birthday Money (Todd Ratchford) jumped to the early lead and Magic Dealer (Wheeling N Dealin) followed close behind. However, before hitting the first quarter mark, Magic Dealer was on the move and took the lead. The opening quarter was trotter in 29 seconds and Magic Deal would go continue with middle fractions of 1:00.3 and 1:30.
Mass Cara (Brett Macdonald) would be the next to attempt a move and he did so as the field hit the stretch for the first time. As they went into the clubhouse turn, Mass Cara overtook second but was caught out two wide. With the inside position, Magic Dealer was never really tested and won in 2:00.
Birthday Money regained second place, but Mass Cara held onto third place.
Magic Dealer continues to roll and has won four of his seven starts this year. He has only finished worse than second place once which was his racing debut back in June. The gelding is bred and owned by Oaklea Farm Inc. out of Simcoe, Ontario.
Paul Walker scored his only training win on the card and his ninth of the year. Samuel Fillion was in the bike for the victory, and he now has hit 182 wins this year which is the most of his career. Fillion scored one other win earlier on the card with My Last Kiss (All Bets Off) in the fifth race.
The only driver scored a hat trick on the card. Paul Mackenzie had a hot start and swept the first two races of the day. He kicked things off with a wire-to-wire win with the three-year-old filly, Had Me A Whiskey (Lookslikeachipdale). It was her only her second win of the year. Mackenzie would then win race two with Delightful Magic (Bettors Delight). The seven-year-old gelding achieved his own wire-to-wire win and paced it in 1:57.3. The aged veteran made his 106th career start and earned his 13th lifetime win.
Mackenzie completed the hat trick in the seventh race with Diamonds Or Twine (Betterthancheddar). This trip was a bit harder, and the six-year-old mare had to come off the pace to win in 2:00.3.
