Harness racing driver Tyler Borth increased his lead in the Hiawatha Horse Park drivers’ standings with four wins in a row at the track on Saturday (May 28).
Rival reinsman Garrett Rooney rhymed off a double early in the card and equaled the score with Borth in the driver’s standings.
Borth got to work with Controlthelightnin (Control The Moment) in the fifth race. He placed the sophomore colt third of four and made the decisive move on the backside, pulling behind Road Rage Attitude (Ondrej Gois) and rolling past him in the stretch for a 2:00.2 victory.
Phone In (Vintage Master) fought off Joe King (Scott Wray) for early control in the sixth, cut soft middle fractions for Borth, and finished strongly to win his fourth in a row in 1:57. Joe King was with the winner throughout but made no impact in the stretch.
Borth made it a triple with Mr Mach Jimmy (Mach Three) in the seventh. The driver activated the gelding from the three-hole as they paced through the third quarter, and Mr Mach Jimmy prevailed by a neck in 1:55 after an extended duel with The Optimist (Travis Henry).
A pocket trip behind a front-end battle was enough for Byrds The Word (Thinking Out Loud) to get his neck in front of Santa Monica (Daniel Clements) in the final strides and complete Borth’s grand slam with a 1:57.3 clocking in the eighth.
Borth is clicking at 33 per cent through 33 starts in Hiawatha’s four cards to date this year. Henry and Rooney, who had two and three wins on the Saturday card, respectively, both trail him by four tallies.
AT all tracks, the Ingersoll resident is 116-for-678 this year – a 17 per cent win rate.
Hiawatha Horse Park’s next card is set for Saturday, Jun. 4.
