Harness racing driver Brandon Campbell dominated the Friday (Sep. 22) card at Century Mile with a seven-win performance.
The highlight came in race seven, when a wild pace scenario set up a last-to-first victory. Campbell and Electric Amadeus (Rockin Amadeus) were 15 lengths back at the three-quarters as Show Stop (Jamie Gray), who opened up by seven lengths in a :27.2 second panel, clung to the lead. Electric Amadeus was still well back entering the stretch with 15 lengths to make up as she straightened for home. The mare hit top stride in mid-stretch as the leading vanguard began to stagger, and she flew by them all in the stretch with a :27.1 last quarter to win going away. Outlaw Gunsablazin (Paul Giesbrecht) held second after contesting the pace. Blue Powder (Jean-Francois Gagne) went from eighth to third in the stretch.
ELECTRIC AMADEUS REPLAY
Campbellās most lopsided win of the night came in the opener. He put Sandras Mystery (All Bets Off) on top, and the two-year-old left her opponents behind as she soared down the stretch to a nine-and-three-quarter-length romp. She was home in 1:56.3 in the maiden-breaking score for owner/breeder Raymond Henry and Campbell, who trains her.
SANDRAS MYSTERY REPLAY
Campbell also won with Wiggy (All Bets Off, 1:57.1), Igot Socks (Lambretta, 1:56.4), Ponggo (Mystician, 1:53.4), Agricola (Domitian Hanover, 1:56), and Metaki (Vertical Horizon, 1:55.1).
The reinsman is striking at a 29 per cent rate this season and boasts a UDRS of 0.453. With 221 wins from 760 starts, he is on pace to break 300 for the first time in his career. At the current rate, he would also break the career earnings record he set last year of $2,056,905.
Century Mile will host a stakes elimination-filled card on Saturday, Sep. 23. Alberta-sired horses will battle in eliminations for the Alberta Sires Stakes (ABSS) Starlet, ABSS Rising Star, ABSS Princess, and ABSS Plainsmen. The latter required two elims while the former three will have two. First post is set for 1:15 p.m. MDT.
