Cheddar Bay (Betterthancheddar) returned a harness racing winner to The Raceway at the Western Fair District in a wire-to-wire victory in the Preferred Handicap Pace on Monday (Apr. 11).
The gelding had spent the prior month at Woodbine Mohawk Park. He won his previous start in London and two of his last three at the Preferred level.
On Monday, J. Bradley Harris chased the gelding off the wings and got him clear to the front midway through the first turn. Cheddar Bay completed the opening panel in :27.1 but was again under urging at the half in :56.4 as Mad Man Hill (Scott Coulter) attacked from first-over.
Cheddar Bay dispatched Mad Man Hill by three-quarters in 1:24.4 and pulled away from pocket-sitter Press Time (Daryl Thiessen) on the final turn. The leader then finished strongly to seal the deal in 1:54.2.
Heza Handy Man (Michael Horner) hustled home for second and narrowed the gap to a length-and-a-quarter. Hollys Treasure (Garrett Rooney) was third.
CHEDDAR BAY REPLAY
It was the 18th career victory in 96 tries for Cheddar Bay. He has earned $225,534 since debuting in 2018. Peter Core conditions the seven-year-old for Donald and Heather McGregor of Camlachie.
The Raceway at the Western Fair District will resume action at 5:50 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, Apr. 11.
