Cheddar Bay (Betterthancheddar) reversed last week’s exactor in revenge for a narrow harness racing loss as he went wire-to-wire to take the Preferred Handicap Pace on Monday (Feb. 13) at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
J. Bradley Harris put pedal to metal from post seven with the gelding, who drew outside for the third straight week. They made the front with :28.2 first panel speed, leaving Lovemyrockinbird (Colin Kelly) – who caught him by a head in the Preferred Handicap last week – in the pocket.
Cheddar Bay had it his way to the the half in :59 and three-quarters in 1:28, but he faced the challenge of Lovemyrockinbird turning for home. But Cheddar Bay, despite wavering late, found the line to take the victory in 1:57.2.
Lovemyrockinbird lowered the gap to a half-length as he finished second. Harpers Hat Trick (Travis Henry) took third.
CHEDDAR BAY REPLAY
Cheddar Bay is now two-for-five on the year with a win on Jan. 27, and he is yet to miss a cheque. The consistent gelding has earned $209,134 and tallied 16 wins in 91 appearances. Peter Core trains the homebred seven-year-old for Donald and Heather McGregor of Camlachie.
The win was the icing on the cake of a Harris triple that he secured with just five drives on the evening.
The Raceway at the Western Fair District’s top trotters get their turn in the spotlight during the track’s next card on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
