Daisy Corvette (Mystician) picked a good time for her first harness racing win of the year as she captured the Fillies and Mares Preferred at Century Downs on Friday (Apr. 26) with the regular purse of the class doubled to $25,000.
The mare sat sixth to the quarter in :26.4 in a strung-out field but shifted out and caught cover passing the stands, advancing second-over to the half in :57.1. Logan Gillis held her on cover through three-quarters in 1:25.2 before hitting the gas on the far turn, cueing the mare to speed to the lead coming into the stretch.
She passed pacesetter Outlaw Blue Isle (Dave Kelly) and the first-over Century Mach (Mike Hennessy) with ease, then dug in to hold off the closing Outlaw Allie Oops (Jamie Gray) for the 11-1 upset victory in 1:54.3.
Outlaw Allie Oops took the place spot coming off the winnerās cover. Outlaw Sharktastic completed the triactor.
DAISY CORVETTE REPLAY
Daisy Corvette was winless in four tries this year, all at the top overnight level, before Fridayās win. She has not missed a cheque for trainer Andres Shanisty, who took over her conditioning in October and quickly raised her to the Preferred ranks. The five-year-old, owned by Tammy Murschell of Medicine Hat, is a 14-time winner on 47 career outings and has banked $135,127.
Travis Ellis sent out three winners on the night. Sporty Jewels (Sportswriter, Hennessy, 1:56.2), Iknowyouknow (Sportswriter, Hennessy, 1:58.4), and Sassy Libby (Andreoli Hanover, Doug Chappell) all won for the trainer. The Ellis barn also tallied two seconds, a third, and a fourth.
Century Downs will feature a $25,000 Preferred and two eliminations for the Ed Tracey Memorial on its next card on Saturday, Apr. 27. Post time is listed as 12:45 p.m. MDT.
