CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – After playing bridesmaid his past two starts Day Delight will look for all the glory in the Saturday evening harness racing feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The capital oval will host a 12-dash program commencing at 6 P.M. Saturday with the $3,000 top event lining up in race 11.
Day Delight is the morning line choice from post 2 in the class fresh off a second-place finish to Time To Dance in last week’s Cecil Ladner Memorial final. With Time To Dance absent this week, Day Delight will have the target on his back as the one to beat for trainer-driver Gilles Barrieau and owners Wayne MacRae, Lloyd Stone, Victor Puddy and Howmac Farms Ltd. A winner of seven races and $108,000 in purses, Day Delight will have five foes for Saturday’s bout.
Second choice on the morning line is post 5 starter Bugsy Maguire (To be driven by Brodie MacPhee) from the Wade Sorrie barn while Rose Run Quest (David Dowling) is another top entrant. Both those horses also raced in last week’s Ladner Invitational.
Peter MacPhee likes Day Delight’s chances to land on top in his Post Time Picks.
“Day Delight raced great last week and was only a length away from Time To Dance at the wire,” MacPhee said. “He gets an excellent spot on the gate and should be up handy the pace so we think he returns to his winning ways.”
Also in the field are Messier Seelster (Marc Campbell), JK Express (Kenny Arsenault) and Cowboy Logic (Steven Shepherd).
Usurper has rail control in the evening back-up pace, carrying a $2,400 purse in race 8.
MacPhee drives the son of Sportswriter from the Earl Smith stable for owner Next Generation Stable of Stratford. The free-legged four-year-old was a winner his last start rallying off the pace in 1:57. His main foes are veteran pacer Creepin (Dowling) and post 6 starter Well Ell (Marc Campbell) fresh off a pair of 1:54 miles.
