Day two of harness racing wrapped up at the fair track in Miami, Mb, and there was no shortage of excitement at the half-mile oval.
Blake Piwniuk won the earlier Daily Double with his drives on Cenalta Duramax (Custard The Dragon) and Irish Luke (Youshouldseemenow).
Irish Luke was the first of four wins for trainer Trevor Williams. The young three-year-old pacing colt picked up his first career win in 2:03.3. He went winless in four starts as a two-year-old and came up big in his 2023 debut. Irish Luke paid $3.40 to win, while the $2.00 Daily Double Cenalta Duramax with Irish Luke paid $8.40.
Cenalta Duramax won the opener in a mile time of 2:02.3 for trainer Mathew Howlett. The three-year-old colt paid $9.50 to win. This was the young Howlett’s 20th win as a trainer, and he picked up another win on the card in the third race with Litizor (Vertical Horizon).
Piwniuk continued to have a hot hand and earned another three wins on the card, making his win total five on the day. One of his biggest wins of the day came in the Fillies and Mares Open with I Will Do It (Camluck). The eight-year-old mare paced the mile in an impressive 1:59.1, the fastest time of the day. This was I Will Do It’s 17th career win and third of the year. A $2.00 win bet on I Will Do It paid $4.70. I Will Do It was another entry from the Trevor Williams barn and was Williams’s third win on the day. He ended up with four on the day after winning five races last weekend.
Former Miami Fair track record holder Tito Santanna (Santanna Blue Chip) returned to the winner’s circle. The ten-year-old gelding’s last win came at Fraser Downs on April 21, and he paced that mile in a solid 1:54.2. Richard Rey trains the geldings that now made 174 career starts and has earned over $213,000 lifetime. The bettors at Miami Fair knew Tito Santanna had a good chance of winning as she paid $4.10 to win.
The current co-track record holder, Grey Zee, was also in action in the card’s final race. The ten-year-old pacer was just beaten out by Tuff As Buff (Sunshine Beach). This was the fifth driving win for Blake Piwniuk and the fourth training win for Trevor Williams. Tuff As Buff paced his best mile time of 2023 with a time of 2:01.2
The last day of racing at the Miami Fair is Saturday (July 29). Admission and programs will be free to celebrate the occasion. The post time is set for 2:00 p.m. CDT.
