Dowling, Doyle dominate Stakes Sunday

SUMMERSIDE, PE – A star-studded stakes harness racing card unfolded Sunday afternoon at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway with top performances in Gold and Grassroots divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacers headlined by a banner day for driver David Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle.

ELM GROVE TALIA REPLAY

Dowling and Doyle started off their winning in 15-dash program in race 1 as Elm Grove Talia ($2.10) delivered as the heavy favourite in a $10,500 P.EI. Colt Stakes three-year-old pacing fillies Grassroots division in 2:00.2 over a track rated two-seconds off.

The duo also captured the lone $7,600 Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series, presented by Kays Wholesale, in 1:55 in race 11 with Middleton Terror ($7.10) for owners Kingsley Walsh and Frank Balcom.

Like A King ($3.70) was the third Doyle trained winner in line to Dowling with a 1:55.4 clocking in a $19,300 Gold three-year-old pacing colt division for owner Jennifer Ritchie of New Brunswick.

Dowling recorded other driving wins with Isle Bea Wickedwon ($9.00) in a $10,500 filly Grassroots division in Race 5 in 2:00.3 for trainer Ronnie Matheson and Saulsbrook Bolt ($19.40) in 2:00.4 from the George Rennison barn in a $9,650 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Grassroots division for three-year-old pacing colts in race 7.

ISLE BEA WICKED REPLAY

Malevolent ($4.10) capped off the day with a front-end 1:56.4 victory in the $19,300 Gold division for three-year-old pacing colts in race 15. Paul Langille trains and drives the son of Malicious for owners Debbie Francis and Rosanne Langille.

Driver Marc Campbell teamed up with three different trainers to score three wins on the stakes-filled card including Bentley ($18.80) in 1:59.3 in Race 2 for John Clarey and Miramichi Charlie ($5.00) for trainer Danny Romo, both in $9,650 Grassroots colt splits. Campbell’s other win came with Mindbodyandsoul ($3.10) in a $21,000 Gold division for sophomore pacing fillies in 1:58.3 from the Earl Watts barn and owners Windemere Farms, Hollis Newson, Sterling Buchanan and Jack Quinn.

Rosetown Mary ($8.70) surged late to win the $7,600 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Mares Gold division, presented by JD Marine and Diving Inc., in Race 14 for trainer-driver Corey MacPherson and owner Rosetown Stable and Taylor MacPherson.

Joe Baxter doubled up from his Summerside operation as Howmac Maleficent ($32.70) delivered a shocker in the Race 6 $21,000 Gold split for driver Ken Murphy and owner Peter Garnet Gilby of Nova Scotia, capitalizing on breaks by both favourites. Baxter and Murphy also won with Miss Believing ($6.80) in a $10,500 Grassroots division for pacing fillies in 1:59.4.

HOWMAC MALEFICENT REPLAY

 

Other winners included Brookdale Layton ($4.70) for trainer Bernard McCallum and driver Paul Langille in a 2:00.3 score in a $9,650 Grassroots colt division.

Barrieau had two driving wins with Im Sir Scarlet ($2.10) in a $9,650 Grassoots colt division from the Darryl MacLean barn and Steady Heart ($7.30) in 1:58.4 in a $10,500 Grassoots filly division for trainer Bo Ford.

Live racing continues Thursday evening at 6 P.M., at Red Shores Charlottetown featuring Grassroots divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series.
