Quebecoise (Sunshine Beach) and Momentarily (Control The Moment) flaunted their prowess with powerful performances in the two Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday (Aug. 1).
Scott Young made two moves to the front with 2/5 favourite Quebecoise and secured a permanent lead in the second panel of the first division. The filly shot four lengths clear at three-quarters before wrapping up the win in 1:51.2 with a three-length margin. Raptors Won (Doug McNair) finished second with J One Twenty (Trevor Henry) three-and-a-quarter further lengths back in third.
QUEBECOISE REPLAY
It was a new lifetime best for Quebecoise, who set her previous mark of 1:51.3 two starts back. She is six-for-20 lifetime and has earned $76,891. Shawn Steacy trains the filly for Katherine Steacy of Lansdowne, Hudson Standardbred Stable of Hudson, and the estate of Conrad Leber.
Momentarily was outright dominant in the second group as she took the Grassroots three-year-old pacing filly division lead. The 1/2 favourite went widest of three leaders entering the first turn and advanced past both before completing the quarter. Driver Louis-Philippe let her loose on the backstretch, and the filly took off into the final turn to score by six-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:52.3.Ā
Second-place finisher Dewitt For Josie (Jody Jamieson) reduced the margin late. Im On The Edge (Randy Waples) also rallied and took third.
MOMENTARILY REPLAY
Momentarily has now won two Grassroots races this season and tops the standings over Warrawee Xpat and Fade Out. Trainer Daniel Lagace co-owns the filly with Ben Mudry of Toronto, Edwin Buhler of Wantagh, and Robert Van Ostrand of Lakeworth. Momentarilyās record now reads six wins in 17 tries for $70,706 in earnings.
Grassroots action continues at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Five divisions of two-year-old trotting colts will contest leg three of the series.
