Northern Charlotte (Muscle Mass) and Southwind Chardnay (Resolve) both took new lifetime marks as they won their divisions of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots for three-year-old trotting fillies at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday (Jul. 3).
Northern Charlotte fished out cover and traveled second-over for Chris Christoforou into the stretch. She hit top speed with 3/16ths to go but found resistance in leader with Match Meif You Can (James MacDonald), who struck the front at the eighth pole. Northern Charlotte overpowered the rival late and got by with a final thrust at the line to win in 1:55.3. Match Meif You Can was beaten by a neck. Sister Twister (Trevor Henry) finished third.
NORTHERN CHARLOTTE REPLAY
Northern Charlotte has won two straight after starting her career winless in seven. She missed two starts in June but came back with a win on Jun. 27. Camilla Christoforou trains the filly, who has earned $27,600 for Brad Grant of Milton.
Southwind Chardnay, in rein to Tyler Borth, pushed to the top in the first quarter and led throughout the remainder of the mile. She only saw pressure moving into the last quarter and proved best under test, winning by a length-and-a-quarter over Seniorita Solo (Henry) in 1:54.4. Northern Magenta (MacDonald) motored past rivals in the stretch to take third.
SOUTHWIND CHARDNAY REPLAY
Southwind Chardnay has three wins in 12 lifetime starts and $46,434 in earnings. She made her debut earlier this year. Vernon Cochrane conditions the filly for Saulsbrook Stables of Windsor (NS).
The Grassroots will continue for three-year-old trotting fillies on Jul. 16 with the third leg at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Woodbine Mohawk Park resumes on Tuesday, Jul. 4 at 7:00 p.m. The 10-race card features a $42,000 Free For All.
