Lawless Shadow (Shadow Play), winner of the 2021 Meadowlands Pace, won his first non-OSS harness racing start at an Ontario B-track on Monday (Jun. 26), going wire-to-wire at Grand River Raceway.
The stallion flashed his authority and claimed the lead for Tyler Moore from post seven with :26.3 first-quarter speed. He cruised through the middle half in :54.3 and 1:23.1 and withstood the challenge of Arties Ideal (Samuel Fillion) in the stretch to win the Preferred 2 Pace. Arties Ideal was three-quarters-of-a-length short. Sea Laird (Colin Kelly) finished third.
LAWLESS SHADOW REPLAY
Lawless Shadow is now 11-for-39 lifetime. He won one of his first six races this year and dropped down after a fourth-place finish last time. It was his first start away from Mohawk since he won the Hempt Memorial in 2021. Ian Moore trains and co-owns the stallion with R G McGroup Limited of Bathurst, Serge Savard of St. Bruno, and Frank Cannon of Sanford. The five-year-old horse has earned $936,204.
There were also two Prospect Series races on the card. Lastkickathecan (Wheeling N Dealin, Scott Coulter, 1:59.4) and Cash Deals (Wheeling N Dealin, Fillion, 1:57.2) won the divisions of leg 2B for three-year-old trotting fillies. Both are undefeated in the series this year; Lastkickathecan won leg 1B on Jun. 2, and Cash Deals won legs 1B and 2A. The latter also won a City of London final this year and has won seven of her past eight, including four in a row.
Anthony Haughan drove four of the night’s 10 winners.
Grand River Raceway is set to see action next on Wednesday, Jun. 28 at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
