Armycaptin Hanover (Captaintreacherous) made it a grand slam at The Loop as he won his fourth consecutive Open on Saturday (Sep. 21).
He got away fourth of five in a :30.3 first quarter for Michel Rey and got the helmet of Clayton Braybrook, behind Appoggiatura, to chase as the field approached the half in 1:02.1.
Armycaptin Hanover tipped three-wide around his cover at three-quarters in 1:33.2 but began to stall on the final turn. The journeyman gelding re-rallied though, and motored by rivals in the final strides to win by a head in 2:03.
Litizor (Don Howlett) led most of the way but finished second after beind nabbed on the line. One Last Bet (Paula Mason) finished third.
ARMYCAPTIN HANOVER REPLAY
Armycaptin Hanover has won 13 of his 23 starts this year, including five in the top class at The Loop since switching to the Richard Rey barn in May. Laverne Turnbull of Kitchener owns the eight-year-old. The gelding has racked up 49 victories and $342,151 in earnings from 159 career outings.
