MILTON, ON – October 4, 2021 – Following a successful second edition, Woodbine Entertainment today announced its intentions to again host the Mohawk Million in 2022.
The second-ever Mohawk Million was captured by undefeated trotting filly Venerable on September 25 at Woodbine Mohawk Park. Venerable bested nine talented rookie trotters to capture harness racing’s richest race for two-year-olds.
With major yearling sales set to begin, Woodbine wanted to inform all buyers and breeders of its intentions to host the Mohawk Million again in 2022, if all nine slots are sold.
“This year’s Mohawk Million raised the bar to another level,” said Jim Lawson, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment. “Venerable’s victory delivered the excitement we all anticipated when the Mohawk Million was announced and we’re grateful for the support from all the owners and participants in continuing to grow this event.
“It’s important for our industry to provide lucrative opportunities like the Million and it’s only proper we announce our intentions for 2022 before owners attend the upcoming major yearling sales in search for their next champion.”
The depth of the Million field was evident by the wagering totals, with $495,270.90 wagered on the Mohawk Million, up from $327,186.16 in 2020.
The all-sources handle for the Mohawk Million card was $3,526,287, just shy of last year’s $3.7 million handle. The 2020 handle was boosted by a Jackpot Hi-5 mandatory payout ($735,985), a wager that was not offered on this year’s card.
The Mohawk Million race follows a buy-in concept, with nine slots available for purchase several months out from the race and the tenth slot awarded to the winner of the William Wellwood Memorial.
Woodbine Entertainment will announce more detailed plans for the 2022 stakes season in the coming months.
