Great cover gets favorite home at Mohawk

With a patient drive from Bob McClure, Lauras Love was able to reward her backers as the race favorite in capturing the $25,000 harness racing feature at Woodbine Mohawk Park Friday.

The second race non-winners’ pace for mares saw Kickupyaheels N and driver Doug McNair take control of the pace. He led to the first quarter in :28 with Snow Shark (Travis Cullen) sitting in the pocket seat.

With no early challenges, Kickupyaheels N charged on past the half mile in :56.4.

Well into the backstretch the action heated up as Trafalgar (James MacDonald) came rushing up first-over with Lauras Love and McClure grabbing the live second-over cover as they gained on Kickupyaheels N past the three-quarters in 1:25.2.

McClure then took Lauras Love off cover to the outside in the stretch and they tore after Kickupyaheels N, passing him by and then cruising to a one and one-quarter length triumph in 1:53.4. Lyons Tilt Hanover (Austin Sorrie) closed well to be second with Trafalgar third.

It was the second win of the season for Lauras Love. She is a five-year-old mare by Betterthancheddar, trained by John Pentland of London, who co-owns her with Gracie Barr of Thamesford, ON. She paid $3.40 to win.
