Grey Sea (Custard The Dragon) earned her first win of the year in the Fraser Downs feature on Thursday (Mar. 28) against the track’s top harness racing distaffs.
She enjoyed the ride behind the leading Hang On Sloopy (Tyson Jacoby) through :26.3, :56.2, and 1:24.4 fractions. Driver John Abbott pulled the right line on the final turn and urged Grey Sea past Hang On Sloopy down the lane. In High Cotton (Kelly Hoerdt) presented a late rush but was a neck short as Grey Sea secured the victory in 1:54.4. In High Cotton was second with Hang On Sloopy easily home for third.
GREY SEA REPLAY
Grey Sea, a homebred of Nanaimo-based Seaspray Stables, is now one-for-five on the season but finished no worse than fourth in her previous starts. The five-year-old is a 15-time winner in 32 career starts with $107,550 in earnings. Gordon Abbott trains the mare.
Two horses continued winning streaks on the card. Vintage Lass (Vintage Master, Hoerdt, 1:58.4) stayed unbeaten in three on the year as she took the fourth race. The sophomore filly gave trainer Cody Easton his first pari-mutuel victory in her debut for him on Mar. 14 and hasn’t lost since. In race seven, Diva Amour (Custard The Dragon, Hoerdt, 1:54.4) won her sixth straight and took a new lifetime mark. Hoerdt trains and co-owns the seven-year-old with Fred Gilbert.
John Abbott and Hoerdt both drove three winners on the night.
