Grey Sea (Custard The Dragon) fired to a new career mark and a big harness racing win in the BC-bred Stake Final for pacing fillies and mares on Friday (Apr. 14) at Fraser Downs.
The mare swept to the lead just past three-quarters, rolling by her previous cover going into the final turn. She then opened up by four-and-a-quarter lengths as she marched to a 1:55.1 victory for driver John Abbott. Westcoast Captive (Scott Knight) was a comfortable second. Hearts A Racing (Dave Hudon) finished third.
GRAY SEA REPLAY
Grey Sea is now seven-for-10 lifetime with $33,580 in earnings. She is striking at 50 per cent this season through six outings for trainer Gordon Abbott. Seaspray Stables of Nanaimo owns and bred the four-year-old mare.
Son Of A Beach (Sunshine Beach) upset in the colt and gelding division. Allan Molloy put him on the engine and commanded high speed in the third quarter to string out the field. Domi (Brandon Campbell) chased him home but was a length-and-three-quarters behind as Son Of A Beach won in 1:54.1. Shake Shadow N Rol (Abbott) finished third.
There was an accident entering the stretch in which Billy Buxton (Robert Scrannage) and Came A Cavalier (Kelly Hoerdt) both unseated their drivers and one horse fell. According to Standardbred Canada, Hoerdt was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Scrannage walked away from the incident. There is no further information on the horses or drivers at this time.
