Harness News Update: Picks & Analysis for Rideau Carleton May 23rd

Thursday (May 23) afternoon harness racing returns to Rideau Carleton Raceway this week and they kick off with a 10-dash card. The Pick 5 wager starts in the sixth race and runs through to the tenth.

Allstar Cheddar (Betterthancheddar) has been racing well so far this year but hasn’t been to the winner’s circle in a couple of weeks. He has won three of his six starts in 2024 and has yet to finish outside the top three. However, Allstar Cheddar’s last win was on May 2 and he paced the mile in a seasonal best 1:55 which is only two-fifths of a second off his lifetime mark.

The Mandy Archer-trained gelding draws post position two and will have Guy Gagnon in the bike. 

ALLSTAR CHEDDAR REPLAY

A four-year-old trotter who is having relatively similar success this year is Southwind Russian (Tactical Landing). He finished fourth in his 2024 debut but was placed fifth after causing interference when going off stride. Since then, he has won back-to-back races and put up a new lifetime mark of 1:56.2 in his most recent. Strangely enough, he has won six races in his career, but he has never finished second or third place.
