Janes Angel surprised Kawartha Downs bettors on Saturday by leading from start to finish at 11-1 in the track’s conditioned feature trot and handily defeating the heavy favourite.
Janes Angel out-left her six foes in the early going and established command quickly. Driver John Thomson controlled the mare to a :29.1 first quarter mile, a half in 1:00, and three-quarters in 1:29.2 while keeping all others more than a length and a half away.
Y C Broadway (Justin Turcotte) presented a late bid, but Janes Angel secured the 1:58.4 victory with a sufficient final quarter despite suffering broken equipment. Y C Broadway finished second by three quarters of a length. Ken Kan Win (Ryan Guy) finished third over the 1/5 Spruce Creek (Doug Brown).
JANES ANGEL REPLAY
Janes Angel improved her lifetime record to seven-for-57 in the win and increased her career bankroll to $40,379. Russell Moore trains the homebred by Cornaro Dasolo for Linda Moore of Orono.
Zebs Watching and Pompano Beach both collected maiden-breaking scores during the afternoon.
Zebs Watching, a four-year-old Hes Watching mare, erased an eighteen-length deficit caused by an early break and came back to win the second race. She was driven to victory in his eighth start by trainer Doug Hie. Breeder Lawrence Zebedee of Wooler owns the mare.
After one top-three finish in 11 tries, Pompano Beach broke his maiden with owner, trainer and breeder Daniel Gassien at the lines for the first time. The gelding is a three-year-old by Believeinbruiser.
John Crake, a longtime announcer on the Woodbine Entertainment Group circuit, returned to the booth on Saturday for his first race calls in 20 years. He announced Canada’s first million-dollar race and called several North America Cups and Breeders Crowns. Crake last called races at Georgian Downs in 2001. He will be back at Kawartha Downs for its Jul. 10 and Jul. 24 cards.
Leamington Raceway announcer Nathan Bain tweeted his praises to Crake during the program.
You are doing a fantastic job!
